  • The Goddessey

    Kurtz

    eBook (, July 5, 2019)
Jennifer Jones is leading an idyllic life in rural Oklahoma. A popular student and prodigious basketball player who loves Fontana High School, her world is upended by the chance decision to join the school’s cross country team, where she first encounters the enigmatic Lisa Petit. It is said in rural Oklahoma that there is nothing more dangerous to the herd than a stray, and Lisa puts this wisdom to the test in The Goddessey. Lisa is a highly decorated and controversial runner, a misanthrope who has never lost a race. Cowed by no one and seemingly immune to threats, she stands defiantly apart from the daily workings of her peers. When she abruptly quits the school’s running program the spring of her sophomore year, people are shocked, none more so than Jennifer. That a peer of hers would quit over seemingly nothing is heresy to Jennifer, and although the two girls have never been friends, she seeks out Lisa to learn why she quit. She gets much more than that, as Lisa’s dedication to her craft and her rejection of the pressures around her begin to alter the way Jennifer sees not only Lisa but herself as well. When she begins to run with the best harrier in the state, Jennifer’s evolution is set in motion as she questions not only why she enjoys a team sport, but why so much derision is heaped upon Lisa, who has done nothing but win as an individual. The Goddessey is a fable about individualism in an age of conformity. It uses the highly combustible arena of small-town high school sports and competition and a strong understanding of that unique American setting to question whether doing what is difficult is the same as doing what is right. It brims with fast-paced action on playing fields and in gymnasiums and seeks to answer whether it is the herd or the stray that poses the greater danger.
